Statement of the Federation of Afghan Journalists in ExileJune 25, 2025
Urgent Appeal for the Release of Niloofar Naibi and Her Young Daughter
The Federation of Afghan Journalists in Exile expresses its utmost concern over the detention of Afghan journalist Niloofar Naibi and her young daughter by authorities in Islamabad, Pakistan. This journalist and mother, along with her daughter, has been transferred to the Haji Camp— a facility typically used for the detention and deportation of asylum seekers—despite having committed no crime or violation.
Niloofar Naibi is among the many Afghan women journalists who fled to Pakistan in search of safety following the fall of Afghanistan. Her arrest and the threat of deportation, along with her daughter, represent a blatant violation of human rights, freedom of expression, and international obligations toward refugees.
The Federation of Afghan Journalists in Exile urgently calls on the United Nations and all international organizations defending press freedom and human rights to take immediate and practical steps for the release of Niloofar Naibi and her daughter. We also urge the Government of Pakistan to immediately halt the detention of women journalists and their families and to provide them with safe and legal residency.
Niloofar Naibi and other women journalists are not criminals; they are unwavering voices of truth who must not be placed in danger once again.
